Infestation

Nests formed under eaves, soffits, around doors and windows, in carports and under decks. By the end of summer the nests have 50-100 workers and a threat to people if nest is by a door or window. The nests are used only once, workers die in fall, queens often overwinter in attics. They feed primarily on caterpillars in trees.

Identification

Nest is open and hands upside down; 3-5 workers remain to guard the nest. They are brown with some yellow markings.

Control

Use a 'wasp freeze' aerosol to treat nest at night, wear protection and use a red light. Do not try to 'burn' the nests.
