Infestation

Subterranean termites attack wood that is in or close to soil; colonies live in ground, and workers move in the soil by following tree roots and cavities in the soil to find food. They build mud tubes that extend from the soil to the wood.

Identification

Presence of mud tubes on the surface of the wood, and soil lining open (no frass) galleries open in wood. Worker termites are small and pale white (about the size of ants).

Control

Liquid insecticide can be applied to the soil around the building; bait stations may be used in addition to the liquid; monitoring stations (wood only) may be used.
