Infestation

Structural wood (pine) is infested at the lumber yard or building site; studs and joists, door frames, and shelving can be infested. Life cycle may extend for 3-5 years or longer.

Identification

Oval holes in wood surface; powdery frass in the holes or below; galleries not exposed on surface, but packed with frass below the surface. Larval chewing sounds may be heard in summer and fall; adults emerge in spring.

Control

Pyrethroid liquid applied to surface of infested wood; treat to run-off; galleries in wood can be injected with liquid pyrethroid; sound wood adjacent to infested wood can be injected to make a chemical 'fence'. Pyrethroids in woods will last 10 years or more.
