InfestationLarge mound nests, usually in turfgrass; nests built in spring, but may last 2-3 years; black ants on trees, shrubs, flowers, and sidewalks. They feed on aphids. IdentificationShiny, black ants, medium and uniform size; found on flowers and moving up and down tree trunks, active spring through summer. Do not enter houses and they do not infest structures. ControlUse liquid pyrethroid to treat nest site; dig hole 1-2 feet deep in center of mound; apply insecticide to thoroughly soak the soil and penetrate the nest. |
