Infestation

Wood siding or roof material ('shake roofs') may have holes filled with frass, or the galleries will be exposed on the surface.

Identification

The flattened oval holes were made by flat-headed beetle larvae (Buprestidae) feeding in the wood when it was a standing tree or a downed log in the forest. The galleries are tightly packed with powdery frass.

Solitary bees may use the exposed holes as a nest site and remove the frass, which gives the appearance of an active infestation, but it is not.

Control

No need for control, the beetles have a 1-2 year life cycle and do not re-infest the wood.
