Infestation
Large, black crickets inside around doors, in ground-level rooms; chirping during the evening. Large numbers of crickets around the outside of house or building.
Identification
Shiny, black crickets about 1 inch long; found in mulch and soil-perimeter of house, may come inside in late fall.
Control
Spray pyrethroid around perimeter of house or building, repeat in 1-2 weeks in fall. Spray threshholds of doors outside; inside use pyrethroid spray and sticky traps; cockroach gel baits may be effective
A regular 'chirping' sound day and night may be a failing battery in a smoke detector.
