InfestationLarge wasps that make 3/4 inch holes in bare soil around the house, usually in summer and fall. They are capturing cicadas from nearby trees and placing them in soil nests as food for developing wasp larvae. IdentificationBrown-yellow, with dark wings; flying during the day over holes in the soil; very large wasps that may seem threatening. These wasps are rarely aggresive to people. ControlPyrethroid spray to the soil surface and to the holes will discourage these wasps; repeat the treatment in 1-2 weeks. |
