Infestation

Bark that remains on structural timbers may be infested with bark beetles; the damage is limited to the area under and near the bark.

Identification

Small round holes in the bark and wood; galleries exposed on the surface of the bark and wood; a 'salt-and-pepper' (brown and white) frass falling from the holes.

Control

No control is needed, these beetles cause no structural damage, infestations are not active because they complete development in 1-2 years and larvae are killed during the kiln or air drying process of the lumber.
