InfestationBeetles attack recent felled trees or sawlogs; females tunnel into the wood, making galleries for the larvae, and lay eggs in the galleries; fungi grow in the galleries (because the wood is wet enough to support the fungi); the larvae feed on the fungi, and the fungi stains the galleries dark black or blue. Damaged wood is often found in structural wood. IdentificationSmall, round holes in wood, surrounded by dark staining; no frass (larvae do not eat wood, only fungi). ControlNo need for control, they are not active in structural wood -- it is too dry for the fungi to live. |
